Why Digestive Enzymes? You are what you eat. That thought can be slightly disturbing when one stops to think that the most nutritious thing eaten in the last twelve hours was a greasy burger, fries and a cola. A wholesome diet is essential for optimal health but unfortunately we just don't eat properly. Many incorporate supplementation into their diet in order to reach a desired state of health. Generally, supplementation has been thought of in terms of a good multi-vitamin and mineral complex, but today growing recognition is given to the importance of digestive enzymes. While we are young the body may provide the necessary digestive enzymes through the pancreas, but there is a limited amount. Subsequently, most digestive systems begin to function inadequately as we age. As this occurs, it is difficult for the entire digestive process, from enriching nutrient absorption to the elimination of waste, to be completed effectively leading to digestive problems like: heartburn, constipation, gas, bloating and more. In order for the extracted nutrients in food to be broken down and absorbed by the body, digestive enzymes are necessary. Historically, the enzymes for digestion have been present in the food itself but processing techniques, cooking and even dietary habits have made it difficult to get these important digestive enzymes through our diet. Therefore, digestive enzyme supplements (especially one that incorporates probiotics, or good bacteria) can help our body to absorb nutrients more efficiently as they pass through the digestive system. Associated with proper digestive system health are exercise and drinking plenty of water every day. Some other suggestions for improving digestion can include:
